Elton and I are virtual friends since two or three years. We are from totally different generations and continents. In terms of age, I could be his father. I accidentally stumbled over Elton’s fotolog, which called my attention because, at first view, it depicted the futile life of a spoiled kid of a privileged family in the „fantasy island“ of the federal capital of Brazil, who probably never faced any hardship in his life and who’s parents never failed to fulfill any of his wishes. I must admit that the photographic and editorial quality of his postings were actually far better than what you would expect from an 18 year old computer kid. Out of curiosity I followed up on his postings for a while and I left a few comments.

After some time we started chatting over the internet and the deeper I got to know Elton, I had to revise my first impression about him. As soon as he found out that I am a foreigner who speaks other languages, he immediately wanted to practice his French and English skills with me, which as a matter of fact were amazingly good for an 18 year old Brazilian. Over the years we chatted many hours (in different languages) over various subjects. For me it was always very inspiring and refreshing to hear Elton’s opinions about things. Before he traveled to Europe I became his personal travel consultant and helped him planning his trip. After knowing Elton for several years over the internet and one short meeting in real life over an afternoon tea in Copacabana, I would describe him as a very bright and open-minded young man who is an excellent talker and very hungry to learn about what is going on in the World. He is an amazing breeze of fresh air. If I was his father, I would be proud of that kid.
